Lavender • France, organic cultivated, steam distillation:  A calming, soothing sedative. Lavender’s name comes from the Latin lavare, to wash, as it was a frequent additive to bath water in ancient Rome. It is calming, soothing and sedative. It has been used widely as an adjunct to inspire a sleepy mood. It appears to improve the quality of sleep if used in the evening. Some say that it eases muscle discomfort. Surprisingly, a study has shown a decrease in the number of computer errors when exposed to Lavender.

Valerian • Nepal, organic cultivated, steam distillation:  Inspires relaxed positivity. Valerian is a powerful central nervous system relaxant, and has been used just prior to bedtime since the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans. It may also be helpful in making you feel less ‘jittery.’ Some use Valerian as an aid to meditations. While Valerian’s strongly predominant action is that of a sedative in fact Valerian has been called “all heal.” See Disclaimer prior to use.

Neroli Oil • During the ancient times, neroli oil was essential in helping combat the plague, relieve fever, and banish nervousness. The ancient Egyptian priests and priestesses also used this oil to heal their body, mind, and spirit. In aromatherapy, neroli oil is valued for its calming and relaxing scent, which acts as a tranquilizer that can help alleviate anxiety and heart palpitations, relieve insomnia, and even prevent or treat stress-related depression. Its fragrance can also help alleviate digestive issues, such as intestinal spasms, colitis, dyspepsia, and diarrhea.

L-theanine • This amino acid found in green tea leaves may help combat anxiety that interferes with sleep. A 2007 study showed that L-theanine reduced heart rate and immune responses to stress. It’s thought to work by boosting the amount of a feel-good hormone your body makes. It also induces brain waves linked to relaxation.

Melatonin • Is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland, which is located near the middle of the brain. It’s sometimes called the “Dracula of hormones” because it’s only released in the dark. During the day, the pineal gland is inactive. But when it becomes dark, the gland begins to release melatonin into the bloodstream, causing you to feel sleepy. Melatonin is a proven compound in our body that helps regulate sleep as well as other physiological rhythms in our body.
